Matild Palace

1056 Budapest, Váci street. 36.

The southern part of the palace, which surrounds the Pest end of the Elizabeth Bridge like a gate, commonly known as the Matild building, began a new life as a luxury hotel, just like its counterpart on the opposite side. The southern Klotild Palace was renovated according to the plans of Antal Puhl and Péter Dajka.

During the project, which is now officially known as the Matild project, the palace was transformed into a luxury hotel, maintaining a period-appropriate exterior while preserving the original building’s DNA in its interior design: its fundamental structure, spirit, and key elements were adapted to new requirements. It successfully regained its faded grandeur and period elegance. To the outside observer, the primary noticeable change is the building’s restoration and purification, with the details hidden in the internal spaces not visible from the street. The renovation had to balance the heritage requirements with the high service standards set by the Marriott hotel chain’s The Luxury Collection brand.

The creation of light, high-ceilinged spaces with Art Nouveau-inspired decorations, complemented by some modern elements that harmonize well with the past, while ensuring fire safety, posed a significant challenge. By using frameless fire-rated glass panels and replacing the fire-resistant concrete ceiling with REI60-rated fireproof glass, the elegant space was enlarged and made brighter. Its appearance makes the central room of the historic palace more unique. Other fire-rated Coolfire structures used in the Matild Palace, which meet the primary safety fire protection requirements, do not detract from or even contribute to the elegant, modern aesthetic, while preserving the original architectural features.
